Tourism was developed recently in Apulia, particularly for its beautiful beaches on the Gargano, for its Tremiti Islands and the charms of Salento. This area is often represented through a characteristic architecture, in the Valley of Itria, the Trulli, little houses with a conical roof, built in the XVIth century.
One finds splendid cathedrals, in Bitonto, Trani and Bari, the exceptional castle of Castle del Monte in Andria, a Baroque architecture very rich, not only in Lecce, but in all the Salento, like two towns of maritime art, Lucera and San Severo.
The area is rich of archaeological sites and testimonys of the former people who lived it : excavations between the province of Brindisi and the Lecce one, the permanent exposures on the Magna-Grecia (where was included the region), the National Archaeological Museum of Tarento or the archaeological excavations and the National Museum of Egnazia.
Among the other curiosities, there are the caves of Castellana, the African Zoo of Fasanolandia, the largest park of Italy where the animals are in freedom, or the village full of white of Ostuni.
To also note, the Sanctuary of San Pio in Pietrelcina, and the Fair of Raising in Bari.
